Location
Stockholm is the largest city and capital of Sweden. It is the site of the national Swedish government, the parliament and the official residence of the Swedish monarch. It has a population of 1,942,233. It has also been the political and economic center of the country since the 13th century.
Geography and climate
The city is located on the country's east coast, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The central parts of the city consist of fourteen islands that are all a part of the archipelago. Due to the city's high northern latitude, the climate is extremely varied with distinct seasons. During the winter solstice in late December, the day lasts about six hours, whereas during the summer solstice in late June, the city's daylight period extends beyond 18 hours.
Transport
The city has an extensive public transport system. It consists of the Metro that is made up of three regional and suburban rail systems: commuter rail, Roslagsbanan and Saltsjöbanan. Additionally there are three light rail systems: Nockebybanan, Lidingöbanan, and Tvärbanan. Further, there are a large number of bus lines.
