Location
Chiang Mai is the largest and a culturally important city in northern Thailand, apart from being the capital of the Province of the same name. It is located some 700 km north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountain ranges of the country. The city is situated on the Ping River and in recent years it has become an increasingly modern city.
Geography and climate
The geography entails mountains and groves with a plain sprawling in the middle of the region of the Ping River. The city has a tropical climate, however it is much cooler compared to the rest of Thailand. The city gets rainfall from the southwest monsoons from India by the end of May that last till November. The period from November to May it gets cool dry winds from China.
Transport
Chiang Mai has a new large air-conditioned bus service. You can see these nice air-conditioned white buses all over the major city routes. Other options are taxis, Pedicabs called samlor, the 3-wheeled tuk-tuk and the songthaew. A songthaew is a covered pick-up truck. The city has an abundance of motorcycle rental services and biking is an easy option to get around within the old city walls.

Airports
The city International Airport is the major gateway to the north of the country. It receives up to 28 flights a day from Bangkok and also serves as a local hub for services to other northern cities such as Chiang Rai, Phrae and Mae Hong Son.

The city is an eclectic mix of local, ethnic as well as expatriate communities from across the world. The city is culturally rich and hosts many Thai festivals, including, Loi Kratong which is locally known as Yi Peng; it is held on a full-moon night in November. Then there's the Songkran festival; which is held in mid-April to celebrate the traditional Thai New Year. Additionally there's the Flower Festival; which is a three-day festival held during the first weekend in February each year.
