Location
This city is centrally located between Miami and Palm Beach while being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, New River and a myriad of scenic inland waterways. It was named after a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. The three forts were constructed at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend and the third near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina. The forts were named after Major William Lauderdale, who was the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first fort.
Geography and climate
It has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The hurricane season comes between June and November. The Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma directly affected the city and other direct hits were Hurricane Cleo in 1965, Hurricane King in 1950 and the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane.
Transport
Broward County Transit (BCT) provides the local bus transportation in the city. Also, the Tri-Rail, a commuter rail system, connects the major cities and airports of South Florida. It also has four railroads serving the city, besides even Amtrak has its stations in the city.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is its main commercial airport. It is located in Dania Beach, three miles (5 km) from of the central business district of the city. It is also located near the city of Hollywood that is about 21 miles (33.7 km) north of Miami.
